Bob Van Norman, a native of Bassett, Nebraska, graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law with honors in 1977. He received a Masters in Public Administration from Arizona State University in 1974. Bob, like his law partners, John Nooney and Kurt Solay, is an A-rated lawyer in the national Martindale Hubbell Peer Review ratings system.
Bob was admitted to practice law in South Dakota in 1978 and in Minnesota in 2006. He was admitted to practice law in federal court in the U.S. District Court for South Dakota in 1982, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in 1983, and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1995. Bob is a member of the S.D State Bar and is a past member of the Pattern Criminal Jury Instruction Committee. He is a member of the Black Hills Criminal Defense Association, S.D. Criminal Defense Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Pennington County Bar Association, South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association, and American Bar Association. Bob is a member of the Order of the Coif, reserved for a select few of those graduating in the top 10% of their law school class. He has earned listings in the National Directory of Criminal Lawyers and in Best Lawyers in America. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Black Hills Legal Services Corporation and as co-founder, then President of the Black Hills Criminal Defense Association.
Bob was the first Federal Public Defender for the U.S. District of South Dakota and served in that capacity from 1999 to 2003. Bob then served as a criminal law reform consultant for the American Bar Association in the Republics of Uzbekistan and Armenia in 2004, before returning to private practice.
